Golden Globe Award memories of legendary Doris Day, serious actress Madonna and a racy Bette Midler!
There has been a strong sentiment for several years now that Doris Day should be awarded with an honorary Academy Award for her incredibly successful film career which peaked in the 50s and 60s when she was one of the biggest box office stars in the world.
She’s been quite reclusive in recent years so it may be a matter of her not wanting to participate but 21 years ago, she did show up to the Golden Globe Awards where she was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award by Clint Eastwood. Miss Day looked quite youthful still and told the crowd: “I’ve been away far too long.” Then she disappeared again!
Madonna’s movie career may be littered with bombs like Swept Away, Shanghai Surprise and The Next Best Thing, but she has had her triumphs including Evita. She had just given birth when she won the 1997 Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture – musical or comedy against some pretty stuff competition: Frances McDormand in Fargo, Debbie Reynolds in Mother, Glenn Close in 101 Dalmations and Barbra Streisand for The Mirror Has Two Faces.
I save the best for last: Bette Midler wins the Globe for best actress in a motion picture – musical or comedy – for The Rose and uses the occasion to quote Joan Crawford: “I’ll show ya a pair of Golden Globes!”
