“Glee” star Cory Monteith is dead at age 31 – fellow stars express their grief and sorrow

Got out of a movie at Outfest tonight to find a text from a friend of mine saying that Glee star Cory Monteith had died.

He was only 31.

It was four summers ago that Cory and some of his fellow Glee castmates were at Outfest for a special screening and Q&A session and was before the show had really exploded.

Cory had played Finn Hudson first as the football jock-turned-glee club star then as the assistant glee club director. His first season storyline involved his accepting his gay stepbrother, Kurt Hummel, played by Chris Colfer.

His body was found Saturday in a hotel room in Vancouver. Police said the cause of death was not immediately apparent, but they ruled out foul play. The actor had checked into a drug addiction treatment facility in April and had talked openly about his drug problems in the past.

Many of his fellow stars took to Twitter to express their grief and sorrow:

Glee Co-star Dot Marie Jones: ‘I HAVE NO WORDS! MY HEART IS BROKEN CORY WAS NOT ONLY A HELL OF A FRIEND HE WAS ONE AMAZING MEN THAT I WILL HOLD CLOSE TO MY HEART FOREVER’

Cheyenne Jackson who has guested several times on Glee: “What I will remember about Cory Monteith is that he was talented, funny and absolutely kindhearted. We lost a gentleman. RIP”

Glee guest star Kristin Chenoweth: RIP CoryMontieth. You will be loved. Always.

Lance Bass: “Devastated about the news of Cory Monteith – such an incredible guy – my thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Anthony Rapp: ‘My thoughts go out to the friends and family and colleagues of Cory Monteith. Always very sad to see folks lose that battle.’

Glee producers and the FOX network released this statement: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person,” Fox said in a statement on behalf of the network, the show’s producers and 20th Century Television. “He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

I wanted to share this photo of Cory and I (left) taken at the 2010 GLAAD Media Awards. I remember him being very sweet and very humble even during that crazy first season when the show was a phenomenon and had propelled all of these previously unknown performers to stardom.

2 Remarks

  1. Very sad about Cory’s passing. He was a lovely young man. :-[

  2. Instead of repeating overused words –even if heartfelt-, when these kind of sad news strike the media –like it was with Michael Jackson or Heath Ledger- I always wonder –for instance- how friendship and silence can be compatible. And I don’t mean in the media, but close friends, even if obviously we don’t know the whole story yet. Yes, something very dire must have been happening because he checked for rehabilitation a couple of months ago, obviously it didn’t work or he just was somehow forced to enter. I always ponder about confessions of a –purportedly- past life of drug abuse –when in fact even under control an addict will keep being vulnerable to addiction his whole life- the theme is so serious and it seems like the industry is so contaminated with drug consumption that everyone seem to turn a blind eye and the only words when such horrible event happens is of sorrow about the lost, not about being honest about the problem. I am sorry for this guy but I wonder who else is struggling with his/her addiction while being fawned by the media and the public. By the way I am not that gullible as to think “hey, no one in the media knew this or that guy was actually hitting rock bottom” but I understand that you can not play with people’s careers with rumors.
