“Glee,” Adam Lambert, Kish, and Kathy Griffin among the 2010 GLAAD Media Award nominees!
Covering the GLAAD Media Awards in LA is always a highlight of my year so it’s with great enthusiasm that I present to you the 2010 nominees awards recognize news coverage and entertainment media who are doing an exceptional job at bringing LGBT stories into the living rooms of America.
Plenty Greg In Hollwyood faves like Adam Lambert, Kathy Griffin, One Life to Live and Glee made the cut as did a trio of films that I found really moving: Prayers for Bobby (pictured above), Pedro, and Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.
Precious is part of the outstanding wide release film nominees and will compete against A Single Man, I Love You, Man, Everybody’s Fine and Taking Woodstock.
The outstanding limited release film nominees are Phoebe in Wonderland, Casi Divas, The Country Teacher, Little Ashes and The Secrets.
Prayers for Bobby and Pedro square off in the outstanding TV movie or miniseries category and compete with An Englishman in New York and Torchwood: Children of Earth.
In television categories, I don’t see any show coming close to competing with One Life to Live in the outstanding daily drama category. It’s storytelling involving and surrounding the characters of Oliver Fish and Kyle Lewis has been groundbreaking and superb. It has also made stars out of Scott Evans (Fish) and Brett Claywell (Kyle) who share a wonderful on-screen chemistry. While Claywell is straight off-screen, Evans is an openly gay actor as is Nicholas Rodriguez who played Nick, the man who came between the couple, at least for awhile.
These three shows will try to compete with OLTL: All My Children, the soon-to-be canceled As the World Turns and the now-defunct Guiding Light.
In prime-time, the show that brought us Scotty and Kevin – Brothers & Sisters – is once again nominated for outstanding drama series and it is worth noting that Scotty is played by out actor Luke Macfarlane. It’s competition includes Grey’s Anatomy, Mad Men, Skins and True Blood.
The television phenomenon that is Glee leads the nominees for outstanding comedy. Out and proud creator Ryan Murphy put together a stellar ensemble cast for the musical comedy series which has made out character actress Jane Lynch a huge star and has launched the career of newcomer Chris Colfer who recently came out.
Glee competes with Modern Family (out actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays one-half of a gay couple), United States of Tara, Beautiful People and Greek.
Adam Lambert, who caused a sensation and scandal with his racy performance at the American Music Awards, is a nominee for outstanding music artist. The American Idol runner-up released his first major release album in November: For Your Entertainment. He’s also been on the cover of Rolling Stone and, infamously, part of the cover of Out. Adam’s competition is Lady Gaga, Otep, Gossip and Brandi Carlile.
And finally, what would an awards show be without Kathy Griffin?
The red-headed dynamo was given the GLAAD Vanguard Award last year (she accepted it in a bikini) and is back this year with a nomination in the outstanding reality series category for Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. Her competition is The Real World: Brooklyn, The Amazing Race 15, and RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Kathy is a two-time Emmy winner for her Bravo show, is nominated for a Grammy for her current comedy recording, and wrote the best seller Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin which reached number one on the New York Times best-seller list.
