GLAAD Report: Only Warner Bros. doing “Good” with LGBT characters – Disney and Sony “failing”

Most of Hollywood’s seven major movie studios continue to come up short when it comes to LGBT representation in its films.

Of the 114 movies they released in 2014, only 20 of them (17.5%) included characters identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and there were no identifiable transgender characters, according to the third annual Studio Responsibility Index (SRI) released today by GLAAD.

No studio received a top grade of ‘Excellent’ with Warner Brothers the only studio to receive a ‘Good’ score for its slate of films. Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, and Universal Pictures all scored ‘Adequate’ and Sony Columbia Pictures and The Walt Disney Studios received a score of ‘Failing.’

Also in 2014, GLAAD saw fewer overtly defamatory depictions in mainstream film compared to last year but offensive representations were found in films such as Exodus: Gods and Kings and Horrible Bosses 2.

‘As television and streaming services continue to produce a remarkable breadth of diverse LGBT representations, we still struggle to find depictions anywhere near as authentic or meaningful in mainstream Hollywood film. The industry continues to look increasingly out of touch by comparison, and still doesn’t represent the full diversity of the American cultural fabric,’ said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis (pictured).

Here are GLAAD’s Observations and Recommendations:

Says Ellis: ‘While we were pleased to see Warner Brothers show real improvement in its LGBT-inclusive films in 2014, they also recently released the comedy Get Hard, one of the most problematic films we have seen in some time. This glaring lack of consistency seems to be common amongst almost every major film studio, showing a need for greater oversight in how their films represent – or don’t represent – significant portions of their audience.’

‘Only when they make those changes and catch up to other, more consistently inclusive media portrayals will we be able to say that America’s film industry is a full partner in accelerating acceptance.’

One Remark

  1. Interesting about Disney: It is very weak — as the study indicates — when it comes to the studio’s movies, but does seem a good deal stronger with its television productions on ABC/Disney including prime time’s “How to Get Away With Murder” and daytime’s “General Hospital” with its BRUCAS (Brad and Lucas) gay romance. However, with that praise comes the urging that the characters — wonderfully played by Parry Shen (Brad) and Ryan Carnes (Lucas) — deserve far more screen time than they are getting — enough so that clips of those two can earn posting on the GREGINHOLLYWOOD Page along with Days’ Will, Sonny and Paul.
