Gervais labels homophobic parents child abusers

http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2012/01/Ricky-Gervaiss-Thoughts-on-Ricky-Gervaiss-Golden-Globes-Performance/_jcr_content/par/cn_contentwell/par-main/cn_blogpost/cn_float_container/cn_image.size.ricky-gervais-2012-golden-globes.jpgRicky Gervais can be a very funny man.

But I have not enjoyed his turns as host of the Golden Globe Awards very much. This idea of embarrassing people in the room – especially his crack about Jodie Foster at this year’s event – caused me to dislike him a bit.

But there are some things he said on Piers Morgan Tonight recently that I really appreciate including this quote that labels homophobic parents as child abusers:

‘It’s when I see some of these religious fundamentalists saying that they’ve told their five-year-old children that if they turn out gay, they will burn in hell. That to me is child abuse. That’s nothing to do with religion or spirituality. That’s child abuse.’

4 Remarks

  1. Thank you Ricky Gervais for condeming those who tell their children they will burn in hell if they are gay.

  2. That is a ridiculously oversimplification of people of faith.. And his comments can not be taken seriously as they are biased, uninformed opinions

  3. D, while I do agree with you on some level, the way these kids are raised often contributes to their self-hatred and oftentimes leads directly and indirectly to their own attempted suicides.

Much as the conservatives of this country take a few examples to paint a picture of their opposition which is distorted to say the least, I believe it is also true coming from the other direction. There IS an awful lot of hatred and intolerance cloaked under the banner of religion in this country though.

  4. He is right. Telling a little kid that if he/she or someone turns out gay will burn in hell not only damage the child’s mind (and it doesn’t matter what sexuality he/she develops, it’s damaging) , it sows the seed of hatred towards anyone who is perceived to be one. And all under false claims rooted in ignorance.
The thing is good religious people don’t resort to that kind of logic and less with a little kid, and –obviously- even less when regarding a whole group of people who happens to not share the same convictions. Good religious people know how live with other –different- people without instilling such amount of hatred.
Good to find a straight guy seeing it clearly.
