George Takei lunches with Donald Trump
Since Star Trek icon George Takei is one of the most famous married gay men in the world, it was a little bit curious that he would agree to participate in NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice with Donald Trump who came out very strongly against same-sex marriage during his flirtation with a presidential run last year.
Takei, however, said he was using his participation in part to help change Trump’s mind on the issue and on Tuesday, the two men had lunch and discussed the issue.
Takei said on Facebook that he and Trump lunched at the Trump Tower Grill in New York City.
‘It was a lively and engaging hour-long conversation that touched upon his personal position on marriage equality,’ Takei shared. ‘He confided that he recently attended a same-sex wedding and that he’d found it ‘beautiful.’
Takei married his longtime partner Brad Altman in a high-profile ceremony in 2008 after 20 years together during a six-month period when such marriages were legal in California.
During his meal with Trump, Takei said he remarked that New York is now a marriage equality state and that is marriage is better for business.
‘Minds are changing across America, and I am always ready to speak to those ready to listen,’ Takei stated. ‘I hope that my chat with The Don might have some effect on his stance on the subject.’
The three-times married Trump spoke against gay marriage during his brief GOP presidential run saying at one point: ‘I just don’t feel good about it, I don’t feel right about it.’
