Gay sheriff Paul Babeau drops out of Republican congressional race in Arizona

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, whose messy split from an ex-boyfriend rocked his campaign for US Congress, has announced that he is no longer a candidate and will instead run for reelection as sheriff.

Back in February, Phoenix New Times ran a story in which Babeau’s ex-boyfriend, Jose Orozco, accused the lawman of asking him to sign an agreement not to publicly discuss their relationship. When the offer was refused, he said Babeu, and his lawyer, allegedly threatened him with deportation.

Babeau denied the allegation and vowed to continue his run for congress. But he did resign from his position as chairman the Mitt Romney’s presidential effort in Arizona.

In his message to supporters, Babeau makes no mention of the scandal involving Orozco or the hit he took in fundraising as a result. Instead, he said his actions are to keep a promise he made to ‘ensure continuity of leadership in the Sheriff’s Office.’

    2201 East says:

Scumbag along with Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

  2. He is a liar, a hypocrite, charlatan and a bigot for pay, but, not when he is trolling for sex, its just a shame that this man with no moral compass is still trying to stay in office, the only good news is that hopefully he will get the Fed’s after him like they finally got his crony, Arpio this week for his racist actions.

Will be most interesting to see if one of the most right wing counties in the US will vote him back in, I doubt it.

  3. Sure headlines looks questionalbe, but I listened to the sheriff on CNN explain his position, as a former L.E. Officer myself. I would have stayed in the congressional race, but he’s convinced his voters WILL reelect him as sheriff, so its his decision how he wants to serve. Arpaio, conversely, speaks to national media in a defensive, confrontational manner, subject to true questions about his agency. He’s done good w/illegal immig prevention, but is approaching time to allowe new leadership to speak more eloquently to inmates, citizens & media.
