“Games of Thrones” actor Kristian Nairn: I don’t fit gay stereotype of “thin,” “tanned,” and “pretty” with “small eyebrows”

Kristian Nairn, one of the stars of HBO’s Games of Thrones, publicly came out as gay earlier this month.

Now the actor who plays Hodor on the series is based on George R.R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels wants you to know what kind of gay man he is not.

‘ … Even within the gay community, there’s a stereotype even when you’re a gay person. You have to look a certain way. You have to be thin. You have to be tanned. You have to have small eyebrows. You have to look pretty. And that’s never been me,’ Nairn tells The Wall Street Journal.

Okay, I get the thin and pretty part, I spend time in West Hollywood and that’s the look. But thin eyebrows? I had no idea!

Kristian adds: ‘I just think it’s important to show the world that we are varied people, as everybody else. You don’t have to be any way. I think that’s really important, and people said that to me. And that’s when I started to realize it’s not a small thing. It’s kind of a big thing.’

Although he had long been out to people in his every day life and was not necessarily in the closet, he had never been publicly asked about his sexuality.

So when he casually mentioned it an interview, it made some headlines.

‘I’ve got my family behind me. I’ve got my friends behind me. If you have that, that’s all you need,’ Nairn says. ‘It doesn’t matter about people on the Internet. And I’m really lucky to have that. And so if I can help one person, I’m happy.’
