From Ellen DeGeneres to RuPaul to Sen. Feinstein, a round-up of reaction to today’s Prop. 8 court ruling
Everyone is buzzing about the 9th District Court of Appeals ruling today which found Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional. Here is a round-up of who is saying what:
Ellen DeGeneres: “Today we took another step towards equality. #Prop8 was found unconstitutional again. I couldn’t be happier”
RuPaul: ‘Prop 8, sashay away’
Margaret Cho: “I’m so excited that gay marriage is gonna happen in California. This is great!!!!!!!”
California Governor Jerry Brown: “The court has rendered a powerful affirmation of the right of same-sex couples to marry. I applaud the wisdom and courage of this decision.”
California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom: “This is the one last big piece of the civil rights movement and it’s happening in our time.”
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein: “I look forward to the day when same-sex couples may once again marry in California and enjoy the rights and freedoms of all married couples. The legal battle is not yet over, but this landmark decision is an important step toward marriage equality for same-sex couples in California.”
Dustin Lance Black: “Hugs and cheers as the 9th circuit court of appeals affirmed that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional!”
LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa: ‘Love & liberty have defeated bigotry & bias. Equality has shown exclusion the door!’
AFER Board President Chad Griffin: “Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a simple, fundamental American truth: How we are born, and who we choose to love, should not be a basis for discrimination in this country. Every American, regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, deserves the same dignity and respect, the same freedom to love and to marry and to build a family. That’s all this case is about. Not special rights or privileges, just fairness and equality.”
Plaintiffs’ lead co-counsel Theodore B. Olson: “This case is about marriage and equality. Plaintiffs in this case, like millions of other gay and lesbian Americans, are being denied both the right to marry and the right to be treated with equal dignity and respect under the law. Under our Constitution, gays and lesbians cannot be denied the most fundamental freedom in American society—the freedom to marry. Today’s momentous decision reminds us that it is time that we, as Americans, treat all of our fellow citizens with fairness and decency.”
L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lorri L. Jean: “This is another historic ruling that moves our country closer to the day when every American will be able to marry the person they love, regardless of gender—and to have that important commitment recognized by the law of the land. Having that commitment honored is no small thing.’
Actor Bryce Johnson: ‘Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Go on and get ya some. moving on from #prop8′
Director Adam Shankman: “Courts just AGAIN declared Prop 8 unconstitutional…CUZ IT IS!!! Supreme court, here we come! Equality…is our birthright! Its about time!”
