From “Company” to “Gypsy” and “Evita,” celebrating three-time Tony winner Patti Lupone on her 77th birthday

The force of nature that is Broadway legend Patti LuPone is still going strong as she reaches her 77th birthday today. Saw her concert a few months ago at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and she sounded a great as ever!
LuPone has touring with her concerts shows and been focusing on TV and film since ending her Tony Award-winning run in Company on Broadway four years ago. Her recent onscreen roles have included Agatha All Along, The Artist, Palm Royale, and And Just Like That, among others.
So many highs in career so far starting with originating the role of Evita on Broadway (Tony win), of Fantine in Les Miserables (Olivier Award win) and of Normal Desmond in Sunset Boulevard – the latter two on London’s West End.
Then there were the revivals she triumphed in – Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes (Tony nod), Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd (Tony nod) and Mama Rose in Gypsy (Tony win). She was also Tony nominated for the musicals War Paint and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
Miss LuPone also took over for Zoe Caldwell in the original Broadway production of Master Class and also took the show to London. That happened to be the first Broadway show I’d ever seen during my first visit to NYC in 1996 and Miss LuPone was sensational. Her most recent Broadway success was the play The Roommate opposite Mia Farrow in 2024.
She has an ego to match the talent which makes me love her all the more. I read her autobiography and it is a doozy – she does not pull punches.
Here are some classic LuPone performances.
Enjoy!
