Florence Henderson guests on ABC’s “Samantha Who?” tonight as Jean Smart’s nightmare mom

The legendary Florence Henderson guest stars on tonight’s episode of Samantha Who? and my feeling is that it is going to be a hoot! She plays Christina Applegate’s grandmother and Jean Smart’s mother in an episode that also features Tony winner Christine Ebersole as her other daughter.

Florence says of very un-Carol Brady-like character: “Nobody loved me and why should I love these two girls? She’s a tough broad. It’s against type and that’s why I love doing these kind of roles. It becomes even funnier.”

Miss Henderson, stunning at 75, told me she had a terrific time doing the show: “Jean Smart is to die for,” she says. “And Christina Applegate? I haven’t been that impressed with a young actress in so many years. Her attitude, her demeanor. Her work ethic is just astounding.”

Two episodes of Samantha Who? air tonight beginning at 8 p.m. Florence’s episode is at 8:30 p.m.

I’m glad ABC has finally decided to air the episode even if it is in the summer. The show, once a runaway hit, was cancelled by the network earlier this year which I think is a real pity. This was one of the best comedies on the air and it deserved far better than that.
