Flashback Video: When Greg Louganis acknowledged he is HIV positive in interview with Barbara Walters
I’d seen this interview many times in the years after it first aired because I taped it with my VHS recorder.
Well, we all know what happens to VHS tapes – they just start to disintegrate!
So thank God for YouTube.
I just came across the interview Greg Louganis did with Barbara Walters for 20-20 back in 1995. Watched it again last night and it is even more amazing than I remember it to be. Greg is so brave, so calm and so honest.
This is a year before any of the life-saving HIV drugs were introduced so at the time of the interview, Greg had AIDS.
Thank God that nearly 20 years later he’s still with us, looking so healthy and a happily married newlywed.
Also, I have to point out just how wonderful Miss Walters is in this interview – how much compassion and lack of homophobia she has.

When this came out I was staffing/training counselors for an HIV/AIDS hotline in Florida. I’ve always hoped to run into you at an agility trial (which never happened) to tell you that your courage and character in telling your story truly did have an impact on many, many people, a number of who I talked to. You inspired people to get tested, to tell friends and loved ones and to have hope for their future. It was a wonderful, loving thing to do.
