Flashback Video: See the entire classic wedding episode of “Rhoda” starring Valerie Harper

Judging from all of the Facebook posts and tweets I’ve seen in the last 24 hours, Valerie Harper has been on a lot of people’s minds.
The woman who played Rhoda Morgenstern for nine years has terminal brain cancer and has told us she does not have much longer to live.
But her portrayal of our Rhoda will live on forever.
I was surfing around YouTube with the thought that I’d post some of her memorable scenes from The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-74) and from Rhoda (1974-79) when I came across the entire episode of Rhoda’s wedding.
Watched the whole thing again for the first time in ages and it is a classic. You have the Rhoda cast including the incomparable Nancy Walker as mother Ida, Julie Kavner as sister Brenda and Harold Gould as father Martin.
Then you have the gang from The Mary Tyler Moore Show as guests in this hour-long episode. Arriving from Minneapolis is BFF Mary and a drunken Lou Grant (Ed Asner) and Murray Slaughter (Gavin Macleod) and an uninvited Phyllis Lindstrom (a hilarious Cloris Leachman). Also appearing is Georgia Engel as Georgette. Not sure why Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) didn’t make the wedding but perhaps there were already enough guests!
I have many favorite parts of this episode including the flashback of all of Rhoda’s bad dates, Rhoda having to run to the subway in her wedding gown to her own wedding because self-absorbed Phyllis forgot to pick her up, and Ida saying to Phyllis: “I’ll kill you.”
It’s great stuff and it’s all here from the first season of Rhoda for which Valerie Harper won the Emmy for best lead actress in a comedy series. She had previously won three Emmys in the supporting category for playing Rhoda on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Enjoy!

This was probably my favorite TV wedding scene ever. We were literally cheering for Rhoda as she made her way to marry Joe. Her mother making her wear a sweater was classic. I hate it that they wouldn’t make the marriage last. The divorce didn’t save the show. RIP Valerie Harper. You created a marvelous, lasting, TV character.
