Flashback: Dame Angela Lansbury was one helluva Mama Rose in the first-ever Broadway revival of “Gypsy”
The late, great Angela Lansbury was born 98 years ago today. She passed away last year after a long and glorious life and career. As a birthday tribute, here is a press reel of the first Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring Dame Angela. She first performed it in London, from May to December of 1973, then took the show on an 11-stop pre-Broadway tour, finally opening on Broadway on September 23, 1974, and closing after a limited engagement of 120 performances on January 4, 1975. Joining Dame Lansbury were Zan Charisse, Rex Robbins, Mary Louise Wilson, Bonnie Langford and Lisa Peluso. This footage was shot early in the production at the Winter Garden Theatre, perhaps during previews and I’m just grateful for any footage from her glorious stage career..
