First US female in space, Sally Ride, died today
This is sad news.
Sally Ride, the first US woman in space, died of pancreatic cancer today at the age of 61.
I remember seeing a clip of her being interviewed by Jane Pauley on The Today Show before her first flight on The Challenger in 1983.
Pauley: “What’s your hair going to do at Zero-G?”
Ride: “Nothing, I hope!”
I didn’t know then, and frankly did not know until today, that Miss Ride was a lesbian. She had been with her partner, Dr. Tam E. O’Shaughnessy, for 27 years.

Richard says:
I’m so sorry to learn of the passing of Ms. Ride.
I was fortunate to see the shuttle Challenger take off in 1983. Camped out on the beach and awoke to see the spectacular assent of the unforgettable spacecraft.
She’ll be fondly remembered as an American Hero.
