Find out why Leslie Jordan had tears streaming down his face while on the treadmill in the Deep South
Emmy winner Leslie Jordan (Will & Grace) posted the following on his Facebook page earlier today and I think he makes a good point about this whole Kim Davis thing – she’a the county clerk in Kentucky who chose to go to jail instead of issue marriage license to same-sex couples.
Davis, who was released from jail today, has the outspoken support of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who is once again running for the presidential nomination for the Republican Party.
He writes: “Out on the road performing. On a treadmill in The Deep South. I got a day pass to the gym. Tears streaming down my face. I feel outmanned. I feel outgunned. People are staring at me as I watch Huckabee on T.V. piously and passionately defending what I thought was already settle. Why I should I care? I am leaving tomorrow. But it hit me really hard. Who is going to stay behind and rescue our children. Who is going to take the guns out of their mouths. If you have not been there you do not understand. What it is like to lie in bed awash with self loathing, staring at the ceiling? Wondering. We must remain vigilant. We must rescue our LGBT youth. We must wrap them in our all inclusive loving arms and celebrate everything about them that is sissy. Queer. Trans. Different. Everything about them that is.. UNCHRISTIAN. There I said it. I think it was Deepak Chopra who lamented that the reversal of Christianity from a religion of love to a religion of hate IS THE GREATEST RELIGIOUS TRAGEDY OF OUR TIME.”
Is Kim Davis a true Christian? I thought Jesus accepted everyone as equals.

As a gay man that lives in the South I know how Leslie feels. The cities are pretty open but the minute you move past them it’s like you’ve taken a road trip into the 80’s. People still stuck on their outdated traditions, refusing to move into the modern world. It can be very disheartening.
They scream about their bible and religious freedom but let me tell you, if a Muslim, Bhudist, Zoroastrian etc refused to serve a Christian based on THEIR religious conscious, these same faux Christians would be out in the streets calling for their heads. So much of their ‘religion’ is based on hypocrisy and hate. I can honestly say I didn’t think the Republican Party with their so called ‘Christians’ would be so blatant in their racism towards President Obama. I have no problem having a policy discussion with anyone who is on the other side of issues but when you throw around racist terms there is no point talking. Living in the South I have heard some of the most disgusting things about POTUS and his family. Truly vile words that I will not repeat here. And then they throw their hands up in the air and insist they aren’t racist. Makes me want to hit my head against a wall in frustration.
Even though in the South there still exists a culture of racism and homophobia there is good news-that segment of the population is dying out. The youth for the most part have embraced our future. LGBT Americans are just like anyone else to them just as it should be. I am reminded of a surprising incident a year or 2 ago-my partner and I were at our favorite grocery store and I happened to be wearing my Pride shirt(with Edith Windsor on it). My partner had been nervous all day not knowing how people would react. As we were checking out the young, good looking straight guy behind the register saw my shirt and said that his ENTIRE dorm was going to Pride and wished us well. Even 5 years ago I might have gotten a look, or been called a faggot(that’s happened a few times including once when a man in a truck spat at us for having the temerity to have an HRC sticker on our bumper)but now 99% of the time, in the cities, people in an odd way celebrate us. I never ever thought I would see it but it’s HERE. And finally more people of all ages are standing up, coming out and refusing to live in self loathing. I concentrate on THAT image rather than the hate coming from Huckabee et al. There will come a time sooner rather than later when their grandchildren shake their heads and think ‘how could you guys have been so hateful to gay Americans’.
And the fight continues.

You have broken-down barriers of men and women twice and three times your size and I’m so thankful and blessed for you, being COURAGEOUS, STRONG AND FEARLESS………..I’m all ‘Yankee’ all day but my Mom (Queen BEE) would marry a Southerner Gentleman and I was raised by one……..I literally ‘Y’all’ed’ people to death and ‘I reckoned’ most of them as well but you can’t think of what you didn’t do but what you did do………….There are men and women because of your ‘portrayal’ of a character that felt good enough, to be open, honest and their ‘true-authentic-selves’ because of YOU…………You might be small in stature but LESLIE JORDAN, you are ONE OF THE BRAVEST, KINDEST AND INSPIRING MEN ON THIS PLANET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!……….
