Olympic freeskier Gus Kenworthy is recalling the painful years during his teens when all he wanted to was fit in.

‘I used to hook up with girls to be cool with the guys,’ he tells Us Weekly. ‘There were times I would cry afterward.’

Even though it was just in October that Kenworthy came out publicly, he came to terms with his attraction to other guys when he was 16.

‘I was at the point where I couldn’t continue to lie,’ he says of his decision to finally go public.

Now that he’s taken that step, Kenworthy says he’s felt embraced.

‘I was blown away by the support, and it’s insane how many people have come out to me — even closeted athletes,’ he says. ‘I feel like I’m helping battle gay stereotypes, because I compete in a rugged action sport.’

Kenworthy is in the early stages of dating a guy he won’t name, the athlete was previously in a five-year relationship.
