Evan Lysacek calls Johnny Weir a “whiner”

Oh no he did not!

Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek had managed to take the high road during the Olympic Games when silver medalist Evgeni Plushenko said he didn’t deserve first place.

But when it comes to Johnny Weir, Evan takes the gloves off in a Q&A with Mextromix:

Q. Fellow American Olympic skater Johnny Weir has said he feels snubbed by “Stars on Ice” because his sexual orientation wasn’t “family-friendly enough.” Thoughts?
A. “Stars on Ice” is really selective of who they hire and they only hire the best of the best to skate. It would’ve been hard of them to justify hiring him, and I think he was really upset because he wanted the financial benefit of the tour. A lot of us in the skating world were really disappointed in the way he reacted, basically whining that he wasn’t chosen.

After reading this, I no longer respect Evan and think he shows his true colors here.

Johnny being passed over by the tour clearly seemed to be homophobic and it was a good thing for Weir to be vocal about it so that those of us who are upset by such things don’t buy tickets to this kind of event.

6 Remarks

  1. You are so right Greg. Johnny is the mature one here. He has done nothing but treat Johnny like he never won over him in competition. Johnny won him a lot when they were juniors and at nationals three times, plus Cup of China and at Skate America. Evan has always been jealous of the loyal fanbase that Johnny has accumulated over the years, and he is lashing out. It is truly telling how much he doesn’t respect one of the guys that made it possible for skating to get fans again, that is Johnny. If it wasn’t for him skating would be gone from the mainstream and no one would care. He needs to think before he speaks, because that will only make us hate him even more. He needs to get a real life and stop trying to mess up Johnny’s. He is admitting that the tour doesn’t want Johnny. In all his words he is admitting that they are prejudiced against Johnny and this discrimination needs to stop in this world for people who are different. Johnny is a one-of-a-kind star and he should respect him for that. Johnny does have feelings unlike Evan, and those feelings have made him stronger as a person. Johnny deserves all the success in this world, and Evan doesn’t. It is as simple as that. I don’t see Evan doing anything with charities, but Johnny is and always has given back, whereas Evan has only give to himself. Every few months he has a new girlfriend and then all of a sudden he doesn’t. He is in Johnny’s words a slor.

  2. He has some nerve with his comments, and, he’s not even that good a skater to be so catty. But, typical of alleged straight men in sports that are typically associated with women, turn on someone else to deflect. And, as someone who usually goes to these skate events when they come into my city, rest assured I will not be going to this one as there is no one worth a single penny to see.

  3. I have to disagree Greg and that is what’s great about America. I’m tired of Johnny using his sexuality as to why didn’t do this, or didn’t get to do that. If he spent as much time working on his craft as he does complaining why he has missed out on something once again it might be a different story. I am a proud gay man but my sexuality doesn’t define me.

  4. It’s Metromix you took this from. Not “Mextromix”

I really don’t think you should judge Evan by one quote in an interview. It’s obvious the two have been competitive for a while.

You have simply got to be kidding me. Who the hell cares? This is stuff and nonsense and frankly the silliest thing I have ever heard. Write about something that matters!
