“Elysium,” Jodie Foster’s first film since coming out publicly, opens in first place at box office

Jodie Foster had not been in a big hit movie since 2006′s Inside Man opened in first place with a weekend gross of $28 million.

Her film The Brave One also opened in first place a year later but it was with a mere $13 million and the film ended her string of hits that had also included Panic Room and Contact.

With Elysium also starring Matt Damon, Foster’s first movie since her public coming out at the Golden Globe Awards in January is off to a terrific start earning an estimated $30.4 million.

It did so during a competitive weekend that also saw the opening of Jennifer Aniston’s We’re the Millers and Disney’s Planes.

Fosters most recent films – 2011′s The Beaver and Carnage – combined to earn just over $3.5 million total at the domestic box office.
