Ellen DeGeneres, “Glee” and Mariah Carey among the winners at tonight’s People’s Choice Awards
Perennial fave Ellen DeGeneres took home yet another People’s Choice Award as winner of the Favorite TV Talk Show on Wednesday. It was the ELEVENTH win for the very funny and very wonderful Ellen.
Ellen, who debuts as the new judge on American Idol soon, was playful in accepting her award noting that with 11, she has “one for each of Sandra Bullock’s toes.”
Since the winners of most of the awards are notified in advance, the People’s Choice kudofest is always guaranteed a star-studded turnout.
In addition to Ellen, among the other winners in attendance were Johnny Depp, Mariah Carey (see below), Bullock, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Ashton Kutcher, Keith Urban (with wife Nicole Kidman), Hugh Jackman, Carrie Underwood, Alyson Hannigan, Hugh Laurie and Steve Carell.
The evening was hosted by Queen Latifah for the fourth year running.
The Fox hit Glee, one of the brightest – and gayest – shows to come along in years, kicked off what is certain to be a very busy awards season by winning the ward for Favorite New comedy. The show is also nominated for the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.
But vampires and werewolves ruled overall at the People’s Choice with New Moon: The Twilight Saga winning for favorite film, breakout actor for Lautner and for favorite on-screen team and franchise.
The new CW show The Vampire Diaries won for Favorite New TV Drama and HBO’s True Blood won for Favorite TV Obsession.
The most predictable winner of the night was Sandra Bullock as Favorite Actress. She starred in the huge romantic hit The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds last summer (the film won for favorite comedy) then topped that with the current hit The Blind Side which has grossed more than $210 million domestically so far.
Johnny Depp was winner of favorite male actor and actor of the decade.
Hugh Jackman won for favorite action star and Lady Gaga won for breakout music artist.
Then there was favorite R&B artist winner Mariah Carey who was the talk of the Palm Springs International Film Festival following her loopy speech Tuesday night while accepting an acting award for her performance in Precious.
Here is the skinny of her far more composed appearance from USA Today:
Carey accepted her award after being accompanied onstage by husband Nick Cannon because she could barely walk in her long gown, which she described as “drama.” Her speech was more composed than the one she made at Palm Springs, which Internet blogs posted on Wednesday because of her long pauses and laughing.
Backstage, Carey talked about Palm Springs, where Precious director/producer Lee Daniels presented the breakthrough-actress award for her performance in the film. “The thing is me and Lee hadn’t seen each other in a long time. … We were really celebrating for the movie … and there’s so much exciting stuff going on with Precious. There’s a time for celebration, and a time for not. It’s kind of like a party atmosphere, but they trick you!” She continued, “If people knew me better, they would understand that I have a sense of humor.”
As for the speech she gave, which some observers categorized as bizarre, she explained that she hadn’t eaten much before the gala. “We had splashes of Champagne, and I love Lee, but he’s a bad influence.” Then she quoted a rap song by J-Kwon: “Everybody in the club getting tipsy!”
