Eddie Murphy to host Oscars!!!

It seems kind of early to be announcing next year’s Oscar host but hey, when it’s Eddie Murphy, it’s pretty big news.

The actor, who shockingly lost the best supporting Oscar a few years back for Dreamgirls, was announced as host of the 84th Academy Awards earlier today.

It’s a wise move on the part of the show’s producers, Brett Ratner and Don Mischer, after last year’s hosting debacle that paired non-comics James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” Ratner said in a statement.  “With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February.”

Added Mischer, “Eddie is a truly ground-breaking performer, whose amazingly diverse array of roles has won him a devoted audience of all ages. His quick wit and charisma will serve him very well as Oscar host.”

Murphy, who got his start as a member of the cast of Saturday Night Live, has had one of the most successful film careers of any performers. From early hits like 48 Hours, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop, to a slew of family-themed hits including Dr. Doolittle, The Nutty Professor and Daddy Day Care.  His next film is the highly-anticipated Tower Heist opposite Ben Stiller.
