Time really does fly. I remember the first time an Eating Out movie screened at Outfest: way back in 2004!

Two successful sequels followed and on Sunday, the fourth movie in the franchise, Eating Out: Drama Camp, had its world premiere at Outfest Sunday. It was one of the only opportunity to see it on the big screen because unlike its predecessors, the movie is going direct-to-television premiering on LOGO on July 25. But that version is sure to be edited!

Q. Allen Brocka directed the film as well as a fifth installment called Eating Out: The Open Weekend which hits the film festival circuit in the fall and will be released on DVD in the first half of 2012. Both films were shot concurrently in 20 days with a production and post-production budget of $100,000 to $150,000 each.

Okay, I’m not going to tell you that this is a great movie nor is it meant to be. But it sticks to the formula that has given all of the Eating Out flicks an audience: simple plots, hot guys, some gross out humor and some sex scenes that are more silly than graphic.

Here’s the plot: Eating Out 3 holdovers Zack (Chris Salvatore) and Casey (Daniel Skelton) are in a relationship  slump when both are accepted into Dick Dickey’s Drama Camp. Zack meets gorgeous Benji (a gorgeous Aaron Milo who I got a photo with after the screening). Zack and Benji  get cast as lovers in a sexed-up version of The Taming of the Shrew and dress rehearsal – or should I say undress rehearsal – gets way out of hand.

Milo is the real discovery in this film. He’s amazing to look at and has a winning screen presence. Another new face to the franchise is transgender actress Harmony Santana who also starred in the Outfest opening night drama Gun Hill Road. It is wonderful that the franchise included a transgender character and made her part of one of the main love stories.

We see too little of the brilliant Rebekah Kochan (pictured above with Salvatore) who elevated and anchored Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat. She just has one scene here and she, of course, absolutely nails it. Kochen has been in all the Eating Out movies so far and also has one scene in the fifth movie.

Picking up the slack in the humor department is Drew Droege as the drama camp director. He just has all kinds of fun with the role and steals any scene he is in.

The rest of the cast includes Lilach Mendelovich, Garikayi Mutambirwa, Ronnie Kroell, Marikah Cunningham, Steven Daigle, Rob Westin, Cleo Anderson, Jesse Archer, Michael Serrato, and Mink Stole.
