Dustin Lance Black finishes work on ‘When We Rise’

Dustin Lance Black is heading into his Florida vacation with fiancee Tom Daley with a well-deserved feeling of accomplishment.

The Oscar-winning screenwriter tweeted to his more than 72,000 followers on Thursday that he has completed work on the ABC miniseries When We Rise.

‘It’s official. After 3.5 years #WhenWeRise is finally picture locked,’ he wrote. ‘Time to collapse in the fiancé’s arms. #Florida here I come.’

Production on the miniseries about the history of the modern-day gay rights movement began in March.

Black had spent three years researching, doing interviews and writing prior to shooting. But he did take occasional breaks including one last summer when he accompanied Daley to the Rio Olympics where the British diver win a bronze medal in the 10 meter men’s synchro event.

In addition to winning an Oscar for Milk, Black’s credits include HBO’s Big Love, the Clint Eastwood directed J. Edgar and 8, the 2011 play re-enacting the closing arguments in the federal trial that led to the overturning of California’s Proposition 8.

Black has longed mixed his work in films with political activism. He was one of the founders of the American Foundation for Equal Rights which filed the lawsuit that eventually led to the US Supreme Court decision on Proposition 8.
