Drew Droege celebrates 20 years of playing Chloe Sevigny: “My God what I have put (her) through”
Comedy genius Drew Droege has had us laughing for so many years on stage and screen. His Rose Nyland in the Golden Girlz stage show is a scream and he was never more brilliant than in the tour de force Bright Colors and Bold Patterns.
But Drew is best known to some for his Chloe Sevigny character which he has now been playing for 20 years.
To mark the occasion, Drew wrote this on Facebook earlier today and Soapdish fans will love the opening line:
This is completely narcissistic but sometimes you gotta give yourself the ole Celeste Talbert trip to the mall with Whoopi…. This month marks TWENTY YEARS that I have been playing Chloe Sevigny. I was in a sketch group called The Deviants at Celebration Theatre, put her on stage and bombed harder than ever. Thank you David Jahn for letting me try it again. Thank you Patrick Bristow for shaping her with me while I was in your classes at The Groundlings Theatre. Thank you Ben Falcone for putting her in the Sunday show where we were often discouraged from doing drag. Thank you to the many drag shows that booked me, even though audiences were often confused/bored/furious by my presence. Thank you Austin Young Matthias Vriens Doug Inglish and all the lovely people who beautifully hilariously perfectly photographed me as her. Thank you Jeremy Kinser for my favorite interview ever for The Advocate. Thank you Larry Clark for letting me nervously audition for you while dressed as her- I cannot imagine how strange that was for you, and um, you’re Larry Clark. Thank you Marc Jacobs for making me a MODEL- I cannot believe this happened, I love you, and I am forever grateful. Thank you John Paul and David Hawe for asking me to marry you! Thank you Bears in Space for the delicious summers. Thank you Lady Bunny for putting me in Wigstock! Thank you everyone who has hired me or told me they like the videos – it continues to blow my mind and makes my day every time I hear it. This is a tough hateful unfair wild fabulous nonsensical business, and knowing that people sometimes enjoy ridiculous things I do makes it all worth it! Thank you Chloe Sevigny- my God what I have put you through. And of course biggest thank you to Jim Hansen for having the vision to turn these stage bits into videos. You changed my life, started my career, and continue to be one of my favorite friends and collaborators.
This coming Tuesday 3/22, Chloe will be celebrating the birth of Bruce Daniels at DRUNK on STAGE at AKBAR. Good evening America!
