Director Mark Christopher about to unveil his restored version of “54” with all the gay stuff back in
I’m so excited for director Mark Christopher who I’ve met a few times over the years and talked about his dream of one day releasing his original director’s cut of the 1998 film 54.
That day has come.
The restored film will premiere this month at the Berlin Film Festival with the gay-themed material that had been taken out of the film returned. In addition, most of the studio-ordered footage has been taken back out including scenes that expanded a subplot involving Neve Campbell’s character into full-blown romance between her and Ryan Phillippe’s bisexual character.
“I’m holding no grudges,” Christopher tells Variety. “I wouldn’t still be working in this business if I was still so wounded as that. Bad things happen to everyone in Hollywood, so you have to just keep moving.”
“What I think is so fantastic about the new Miramax is that directors’ cuts either come from very famous movies, like ‘Blade Runner,’ or from very famous directors, like Orson Welles. We aren’t either, so the fact that we get to do this, it’s a testament to the fans and the people who have shown interest in this movie for so long.”
