Dharun Ravi sentenced to 30 days in Rutgers spycam case that led to Tyler Clementi’s suicide

Dharun Ravi could have been sentenced to spend 10 years in prison today but instead will be behind bars for just 30 days.

The former Rutgers student was convicted in March of spying on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, as he had an encounter with another man with a webcam then discussing it on discussed on Twitter with other students.

Clementi, jumped to his death off of the George Washington Bridge.

The judge scolded Ravi before handing down the sentence: ‘I heard this jury say, ‘guilty’ 288 times–24 questions, 12 jurors. That’s the multiplication. I haven’t heard you apologize once.’

3 Remarks

  1. 30 days is an insult. I didn’t think deporting him would have served any purpose but 30 days? Meanwhile a woman who fired a warning shot into her ceiling to get her abusive ex husband to leave was sentenced to 20 years. For a warning shot!

  2. This case and the *extremely* lenient sentence sets a bad precedent for future secret web cam pervs….they can do what they want and get a slap on the wrist. I was sick when watching the verdict being read.

  3. whats wrong w/the judge, i researched the law, and legal experts on cnn said he should get the full 10 years on 15 conviction counts, felony hate crimes in NJ. 30 days in jail is what 1st time dui people get, this guy directly caused the death of Clementi. Deportation was another option. Prosecuters are shocked and will appeal. Bias intimidation and internet transmissions of the act recorded are the key elements of the crime thata sealed his fate. if he got into Rutgers, he should be smart enough to avoid this behavior, its not a community college! i pray for Clementi’s parents and brother, who is also gay. justice will come.
