A tale of 2 cities. I can’t believe that I’m actually living in Paris and working in London. Years ago, a friend of mine and I sat drinking in a bad chain restaurant and fantasized what our lives would be like in the future. We left the place and wandered into the night with the plan to “bump” into each other. We probably each walked around for 10-15 minutes and then we saw each other and pretended that it was 20-30 years in the future and we found another place to drink and we caught each other up on our lives. I remember that we each created tragic-ish future/pasts for ourselves. (Futures which largely came true, by the way). But I remember distinctly creating this future where I was jetting back and forth to London and I was successful but unhappy—alone after a string of failed romances. Weird what we put out there. Of course, I’m not alone. I never saw myself married. I never saw myself with a child. I never ever dreamed of living in Paris. At least I got the London part right.
