Daytime Soap Clips: Phillip Chancellor III says goodbye on “The Young and the Restless”
This is such a bummer.
The character of Phillip Chancellor III leaves Genoa City to return to Australia on Friday’s episode of The Young and the Restless. It’s a bummer because Phillip is played by out actor Thom Bierdz who returned to the show six months ago after a 20-plus years absence. The character was supposed to have been killed in a car crash but we learned that Phillip faked his death because he wanted to escape his family and hometown and live as an openly gay man.
The storyline was never developed in a way that it could/should have been but it did give us Thom again on-screen and as you can see in these clips, he had developed such a nice rapport with his on-screen wife and son. The goodbyes seem genuinely sad.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth all those years ago,” Phillip tells his family. “Things could have been so different. … If I would have been honest 20 years ago about how miserable I was, there would have been sadness and tears, frustration and anger. But it would have been better than faking my death. And I wouldn’t have lost all those years with my son Chance, we wouldn’t have lost all those years.”
Father and son reconcile as Chance calls Phillip “dad” and they embrace and Phillip says: “my son.”
Let’s hope Thom will be able to return to the show sometime soon with a really meaty storyline and that if the show ever decides to try and have gay characters like Phillip, Rafe (and Adam at least partly), that they will commit to those storylines the way One Life to Live has.
Thar’s a show has so much energy right now.

Greg, You said it so well that there isn’t much for me to say except that I’m really p….. off. Those incompetent writers had at their disposal a really great character to work with. There were so many facets to explore. But no! They choose to focus on a vile, despicable character whom they continue to let fly. Oh, and some of those ridulous storylines -but I’m not going to continue. If you watch the show, you’ll know what I mean. I emailed Thom, because I am a fan of his(so talented) and he was kind enough to answer. He still doesn’t know if he’ll be back. If Y&R doesn’t renew, let’s hope some smart producer at another show will sign him.
