Daytime Soap Clip: Officer Oliver Fish and his parents try and reconcile on emotional “One Life to Live”
Excuse me while I dry my tears. This is just a gut-wrenching episode of One Life to Live, so much so that while watching it, I got choked up and wanted to give a big hug to Oliver Fish who has been showing a lot of courage.
His parents have not taken his being gay very well at all – both pinning their disapproval to their religious beliefs. The show does a superb job of jumping back-and-forth between each parent as Mrs. Fish goes to visit her son on the sly and Mr. Fish is confronted in a hotel lobby by first Marty Saybrooke and Lt. McBain, Oliver’s boss.
The dad tells them Oliver is no longer his son and both defend Oliver. Marty says: “I walked away from my son once and it was the worst thing I ever did. Please don’t make the same mistake I did.”
But it is Kyle who causes the dad to thaw ever-so-slightly when he tells him: “You’re his hero, you’re the whole reason he wanted to become a cop. You’re also the reason why he lived a lie for so long.”
The conversation with his mother really goes a long ways in completely explaining Oliver’s actions regarding Kyle – why he ended their relationship in college and why he tried to be straight with Layla. He said to his mom of Kyle: “I loved him and I gave him up – for you. I worked so hard to be straight, to be a guy who likes women but I’m not. What I felt for Kyle, I’ve never felt before or since.”
In the end, the parents come back to say goodbye to Oliver and it is very emotional and realistic. Have tissues nearby as you watch.
