Daytime Emmy Award nominations announced: So where is Eric Sheffer Stevens nod for As the World Turns?

Okay Daytime Emmy voters, what happened?

The 2011 nominations were announced today and one name I was certain would appear in the category of outstanding supporting actor in a daytime drama was that of Eric Sheffer Stevens for his portrayal of Dr. Reid Oliver on As the World Turns.

But it was not there! I checked twice! Then one last time. Nothing. What a missed opportunity to acknowledge one of the most unique, moving, funny and intelligent characters in the history of daytime soaps.

Stevens brought something very unique to a daytime soap and the soap’s writers knew they had struck gold with the actor and his character. He could be so funny, he could be  such a jerk, he could be very sexy and in the end, he could break our hearts.

The seasoned actor was new to soaps and his chemistry with Van Hansis (Luke) was so crackling that many fans welcomed the split of longtime lovers Luke and Noah (Jake Silbermann) so Luke could be with Reid.

That’s why I selected Eric as the winner of the Greggy Award for Soap Star of the Year. He made ATWT worth watching in its final days.

This is a major slight and quite frankly, an outrage.

Here are the five actors who did make the final cut: Jonathan Jackson, as Lucky Spencer on General Hospital; Jason Thompson, as Patrick Drake on General Hospital; Brian Kerwin, as Charlie Banks on One Life To Live; Doug Davidson, as Paul Williams on The Young and the Restless; Billy Miller, as Billy Abbott on The Young and the Restless.

6 Remarks

  1. He’s not nominated because he’s the most overrated actor I’ve ever seen come out of a soap. I was pleased not to see his name.

There were far more deserving people – even on the soap itself. Trent Dawson should have been nominated ahead of him.

  2. Absolutely floored that Eric didn’t get nominated. He was the best thing about daytime last year – a breath of fresh air and a fantastic addition to ATWT. I still can’t believe it.

Thankfully, his pilot was picked up by FOX last night, so at least some good news balances out the jaw-droppingly wrong Emmy list. We’ll be seeing more of this talented actor for years to come.

I was stunned to see he didn’t receive a nomination. He took a truly unique character and made him shine. He and Van were pure magic together!! I loved their chemistry, and they both elevated acting to a higher level.

I’m surprised, and shocked that Eric Sheffer Stevens didn’t get nominated fot the Emmy’s. Eric made the Character of Dr. Reid Oliver unique, funny, interesting, intriguing, intelligent, snarky, loving, and sexy.Eric master the role to the degree of perfection. In addition to that, his amazing chemistry with Van Hansis made those two an unforgetable duo. After such a short time in the show he has followers that will follow him in the future to anywhere his acting roles will take him. I’m looking forward to his future projects. I’ll be there watching. It’s only a matter of time before his recognition as an amazing actor will come.

  5. Sad to say, this is indicative of what is killing the soaps. Same old, same old- rewarding the same sad writing and the same scenery chewing acting. Eric was a cut above- no overly dramatic expressions made for close ups- no over the top hysteria- no squinting. No wonder his contemporaries passed him over- he made them all look like.. soap actors.

The soaps were lucky to have him for as long as they did and as far as who was deserving- this guy made that last 9 months. That emmy should have been hand delivered to him but I suppose he will just have to settle for a couple of guest appearances on TV, a commercial, 2 movies in the can and a primetime series- karma for the undeserving lout. 🙂

  6. Eric and Trent both made it through the pre-nom rounds but not the final nomination. I would have happily seen one or both of them nominated.
The problem is that Reid was the viewers voice. He said all the things that soap viewers had for years: all the criticisms, irritations, etc. Does the industry really want to reward an actor who played (extraordinarily well) a character who basically mocked what has been going on with SLs in soaps? Doubt it. Colin Firth could have played Reid and he wouldn’t have been nominated either. Dr. Reid Oliver didn’t fit the mold, was too multilayered and nothing like what we have seen in many years in daytime drama. A lot of people that I have seen nominated do not play multilayered characters, but instead play one-dimensional characters.
