The magazine article he wrote about his family has alienated him from them and he realizes he’s made other big blunders in the past such as letting his dad go to jail for a shooting that he committed and got his ex-girlfriend pregnant even after he knew he was gay.

Because of these things, the article was supposed to be his opportunity to finally show the people of Salem that he could do something right.
