   You know, I’ve been resistant to the “vibe” everyone’s been noticing about Will and E.J. but now I think I’m seeing it front and center. And it is either most certainly a conscious choice of James Scott (who plays EJ) or the show’s leadership. Either way, it adds a layer that is both hot and creepy to the whole thing which just makes the scenes a little more delicious. I always watch new soap actors (including Freddie Smith, who plays Sonny) and am concerned when they are not “playing chemistry” with as many characters as possible. (Smith famously said since his character was not paired with Chad or Will he was choosing not to play any flirting or undercurrent.) The key thing is that loyalty and passion from soap fans comes from the potential they see in couples and even unrealistic “shipping” of characters who will never be together. When you have crazy chemistry with your scene partners, the press notices it, blogs notice it, and fans go crazy. Casey Dedrick (who plays Chad) certainly played it with Chad/Sonny–and pretty much everyone else in his age group he interacts with–and Vanessa Marcil of GENERAL HOSPITAL was the queen of it. She would play chemistry with doorknobs on that show. Scott’s choices here to be physical and intimate (especially since his character is one of the few who knows Will is gay) gives the whole thing a very complicated, but undeniably sexy vibe, as did the Chad/Sonny scenes, which make them more interesting…and add just a hint of “what if?” Good work guys.
