David Burtka is going back to Broadway

Now it’s his turn.

David Burtka is getting ready to step out from behind the considerable shadow of husband Neil Patrick Harris in a big way.

He has been tapped to star in the wedding-themed Broadway musical It Shoulda Been You which will open this spring.

The show will be directed by Tony winner David Hyde Pierce who is best known for his long run as Niles Crane on the sitcom Frasier.

It Shoulda Been You is described as ‘a culture clash for the ages when two families from wildly different backgrounds come together to celebrate a wedding.’

The show features music by Barbara Anselmi and the book and lyrics are by Pierce’s husband, Brian Hargrove.

When Burtka met Harris more than a decade ago, both were living in New York City and appearing in Broadway shows.

But soon after, Harris landed a role in the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother and the couple relocated to Los Angeles for the show’s nine season run.

Burtka did a few guest spots on the series and worked for a time as a correspondent for E! News but he also trained to become a chef and eventually focused on raising their twins.

The family returned to New York to live earlier this year when Harris began his Tony Award winning run in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

When he won the Drama Desk Award in June for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Harris hinted that it would soon be Burtka’s turn to shine.

‘Thank you so much for your love and for your patience and your sacrifice in all that you do,’ Harris said that night. ‘And I can’t wait for the opportunity soon when these roles get to be reversed and I get to cheer you on up here doing what you do so well.’

Prior to the start of It Shoulda Been You, Burtka stars in a solo cabaret act entitled Burtka, David at 54 Below in New York City on 25 and 26 November.

The show will be directed by Harris who directed the Hollywood Bowl production of Rent a few years back.

The couple will also be guest starring in the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show.
