Cynthia Nixon to be honored by GLAAD

http://img2.timeinc.net/health/images/slides/cynthia-nixon-400x400.jpgIt’s always great when someone you think is so cool gets a big award. Cynthia Nixon already has two Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy so what’s left for the woman best known for her role as Miranda on the Sex and the City TV series and movies?

The Vito Russo Award from GLAAD, that’s what!

It was announced this week that Miss Nixon will receive the award at the New York ceremony of the GLAAD Media Awards. It is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights.

“Cynthia Nixon has been a vocal and visible advocate who has transformed cultural attitudes about our community,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. “She is a perfect example of how sharing your personal story and speaking out for marriage equality can inspire change among fair-minded Americans. It is our privilege to honor her.”

She has become a very articulate voice for LGBT equality appearing on television and at rallies to discuss same-sex marriage.

I had the chance to meet and chat with Miss Nixon just over a year ago when she was honored at The Family Equality Council’s National Awards Dinner in LA. Here is what she told me about getting that particular award from an LGBT organization: “Entertainment is one thing, but when you’re talking about politics and when you’re talking about things that really affect people’s lives, where they live and their kids, it’s just a whole different kind of experience. People think they know you from the parts that they play but when you’re able to come and be honored – which is so lovely – and to also talk to them about your life and what it’s like. It’s a whole different kind of interaction with an audience when it’s you as opposed to a character.”
