Cynthia Nixon is engaged!

Acclaimed actress Cynthia Nixon, now one of the most high-profile lesbians in the country, announced at a rally for same-sex marriage in New York City on Sunday that she is engaged to longtime girlfriend Christine Mariononi.

Cynthia, best known for her role as Miranda on the Sex and the City, showed off her engagement ring at the Action=Marriage Equality rally in midtown where she was joined by her Sex costar Kristin Davis, David Hyde Pierce and New York Governor David Paterson.

When I spoke with Cynthia at The Family Equality Council’s National Awards Dinner in Los Angeles last October. It was a few weeks before the passage of Prop. 8 and I asked her if she wanted to marry Christine.

“Yes, I would,” she said. “I think we’re really waiting for it to come to New York and, God willing, it’s not going to be too much longer. And I think that Proposition 8, it doesn’t upset me so much or worry me so much that it’s on the ballot. What really worries and upsets me is all the false advertising that the other side has been doing – all the lies they have been telling people to frighten the voters. Before they started doing all these lie-filled commercials, that was not going to pass. And now it’s very iffy. I would think that the other side, you really should be educating your population and seeing how they want to vote rather than filling them with fear and telling them things like their places of worship are going to be de-funded if they won’t do same-sex marriages or that their children in kindergarten will be receiving a blow-by-blow description of homosexuality is this passes. Stuff like that is obviously untrue.”
