Creative Arts Emmy winners include Lily Tomlin, Tim Gunn, Dan Bucatinksy and “Behind the Candelabra”

Wow, it was a great night for gays at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The HBO miniseries Behind the Candelabra about the romance between Liberace and Scott Thorson won eight awards including two for make-up as well as wins for hairstyling, costumes, casting and single-camera picture editing.

Leads Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are nominated for their performances in Candelabra with the winner being announced during next weekend’s Prime-Time Emmys telecast.

The legendary Lily Tomlin won her sixth Prime Emmy and first since 1981 (she also won a Daytime Emmy in 1995). This win was in the category of Outstanding Voiceover Performance for her work in the special An Apology to Elephants.

Backstage, Tomlin was asked about whether she and her partner of 46 years, Jane Wagner, would be getting married soon.

“We still have not gotten married, but we if we do we won’t be able to sell the pictures to People, it will be a very under-the-radar occasion,” she said. “God knows we don’t want to even get into the wardrobe thing.”

Another big winner was Dan Bucatinsky who took home the best guest actor Emmy for his role in ABC’s Scandal. He’s an openly gay actor playing a multi-dimensional gay role on network television.

“How many people get to say onscreen husband and real-life husband?,” Bucatinsky marveled before giving a shoutout to the recent historic vote on gay marriage. “Thank you Supreme Court of the United States!”

Dan beat out a stellar group of nominees: fellow out actor Nathan Lane for The Good Wife, Michael J. Fox for The Good Wife, Rupert Friend for Homeland and Mad Men nominees Robert Morse and Harry Hamlin.

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn took the Emmy for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program.

They bested American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron of Dancing With The Stars, Cat Deeley of So You Think You Can Dance, and Anthony Bourdain of The Taste.

And finally, as one of the producers of the Tony Awards, Neil Patrick Harris won the fourth Emmy of his career when the telecast celebrating the best on Broadway won Outstanding Special Class Program for the third time in four years.

Harris also won an Emmy in 2010 for his guest performance on Glee.

He will host next weekend’s Prime-Time Emmys telecast.
