Coco Peru’s sells out three shows for good cause

For the third night in a row, the Renberg Theatre was completely sold out on Sunday for the incomparable Coco Peru in a performance of There Comes a Time.

I settled into my seat in the second row with friends and prepared for what I knew would be a fun night since I had seen the show last spring.

Before Coco made her grand entrance and went on to enchant us with a series of hilarious anecdotes, observations and songs, an official from the LA Gay & Lesbian Center reminded us that all of the proceeds from the three sold out shows over the weekend would benefit the Center’s programs for homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning young people.

I made a mental note then surrendered to the magic that is Coco for the next 90 minutes or so.

But when I got home, I started reading about some of the backlash against Kirk Cameron who had said a few days earlier that homosexuality is ‘unnatural, ‘detrimental,’ and ‘ultimately destructive.’

This is a guy who has six children.

What if one of those kids turn out to be gay and refuses to try and pray the gay away. Would Cameron kick the kid out of the house?

Who knows?

But there are plenty of parents – far too many – who do kick their gay kids out of the house if these kids dare to be themselves. These are parents who claim to love their kids and who hide behind their religious faith as an excuse to reject or emotionally abuse their child.

So a lot of these kids end up homeless – because they have intolerant and anti-gay parents like Kirk Cameron and Rick Santorum.

That’s why we need the services of the LA Gay & Lesbian Center’s youth center.

And that’s why it’s so wonderful to have people like Coco Peru donating their talent and their fame to raise money for a very good cause.

Thank you Coco!

  1. Thats stupid. I highly doubt Kirk Cameron would kick one of his kids out, and neither would Rick Santorum. I would question the faith of anyone who would kick out their kids for that. Those who think they would obviously haven’t met any real Christians and are just listening to anti-christian rhetoric. Anyone who kicks their kid out for that is using “Christianity” as an excuse for his or her own ends, like the WBC people. (Former *Democrat* activist, btw) The kids probably already had a rocky relationship with their parents.

Just because Christians believe something is a sin doesn’t mean that they hate the person doing the sinning. Do I think smoking is wrong? Yes!!! Would I shun someone for smoking? No! That’s stupid! One of my favorite co-workers smokes. Now, would I let them smoke in my house? No. But I wouldn’t forbid them from coming over because they may get their “smokers cooties” all over my house, or kick my kid out for taking it up? No.

The problem with the LGBT community is they take everything as an afront to them, and they take everything to the extreme. If you think about things practically you would realize the whole world isn’t out to get you! Or at least they aren’t in my portion of the Bible belt, but who knows, maybe LA is more conservative than us, after all, Newt Gingrich did win our primary.

  2. And another thing. It elevates abused kids that are LGBT above the needs of other kids. So say a kid is completely straight but suffers from emotional and physical abuse because she is fat, or disabled in some way, or just because her parents are evil, is her need less important?

@Allison – Places like the LA Gay & Lesbian Center’s Youth Center do not elevate the abused LGBT kid’s needs above the needs of other kids. Support centers like this serve a purpose in dealing with the specific issues LGBT youth might face. It’s no different than let’s say Latino outreach programs that deal with youth and gang pressure issues. I might add that there is no shortage of Christian youth counseling centers. I get the impression that a great many supposed “Christians” just don’t want gay youth centers to exist at all because it says to young people that being gay is okay. Kirk Cameron might not throw his kids out, but I’m sure he would be just as destructive trying to de-gay them, destroying their self-esteem and spirit in the process. THANK YOU COCO for raising money for a highly worthwhile cause.
