Chris Kluwe turns down White House invite for LGBT reception because not even the President ‘is allowed to supersede an NFL mandatory mini-camp practice’
Chris Kluwe has done so much in the fight for LGBT equality in the past year that it is not surprise to see him invited to the annual Pride Reception at The White House to be held on June 15.
But Kluwe, who was cut from the Minnesota Vikings recently, is putting his job as a punter for the Oakland Raiders first.
In an email addressed to President Barack Obama (as well as ‘whomever reads these things’). Kluwe wrote that he would ‘really, really, REALLY like to be there but unfortunately, not even the President of the United States is allowed to supersede an NFL mandatory mini-camp practice.’
Kluwe wrote that he owes it to his teammates and coaches to by fully prepared for the upcoming NFL season but he’d like to be kept in mind for future invites ‘unless we have a game. Or practice. Or mandatory hot yoga classes.’
Then he added this PS: ‘If you really wanted to, I’m sure I could make a late supper if an F35 were to pick me up at the field right after practice. Just saying….’
And a PPS: ‘Please don’t do that. Then I’d be “that guy” on the team. You know. “That guy”. (Plus it also seems like an extremely unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars.”
When Kluwe was cut from The Vikings after more than seven years, there was speculation that his activism had begun to overshadow his play.
In making his White House letter public via Twitter, Kluwe used humor to dispell that notion and wrote: Lest anyone EVER question my commitment to a team that employs me, I present exhibit A. #focus, #SOFOCUSED pic.twitter.com/1DDaokN11E
He also tweeted: ‘And no, I did not ask if I could skip practice. Mandatory minicamps are mandatory, and I’m here to help the team win. So it goes.’
