Cherry Jones talks to The Advocate about break-up with Sarah Paulson and Meryl getting her role in “Doubt”

Cherry Jones opens up a bit about her life and career in a new interview posted on Advocate.com.
A recent Emmy winner for her performance as the President of the United States in 24, Miss Jones is finally achieving a level of fame and recognition deserving for someone of her immense talent.
Even though she was a huge star on Broadway, 24 marks the first time large segments of the public have seen her work. It was that lack of fame that resulted in Meryl Streep being cast in the role of Sister Aloysiusin the film version of Doubt even though Miss Jones had been so acclaimed and won her second Tony Award for her stage performance.
“I’m a very pragmatic person, and I knew that so many more people would see the film if it was [with] Meryl,” says Jones. “I knew [it] was going to need a name and who that name might be because it’s one of the greatest roles for anybody over 50.”
When she won the Tony for Doubt in 2005, she created a bit of a buzz when she kissed her then-girlfriend, actress Sarah Paulson on national TV. But when she accepted her Emmy, there was no mention of Paulson – and people noticed.
“Sarah told me there was a hubbub online,” Jones says of the reaction.
She reveals that the couple had ended their six-year relationship in June.
“We joke that we’ve been trying to separate since the moment we met,” she said. “We’re just so different. Obviously the age difference [Paulson is 34], but if we were more alike, I think the age difference wouldn’t have mattered.”

Well, this story was pleasantly gossipy, for once. Prior to this, we had only heard about what a loving, friendly break-up they had. Now we have Cherry saying how she and the quite young, quite hot (although small-bosomed) Sarah Paulson, “were not alike.”
We know that Cherry comes from a sort of academic background (NPR on-air newsreader, former state and US National Debate Champion as a high school student) and also a Shakespearean-trained actress. We know that Sarah love to work in TV and is quite close friends with Amanda Peet.
So enough with the goody-shoes stuff already. Let’s have a little throwing of the pots ‘n pans. Remember, in the world of publicity, ‘its all good.”

PS: Hey Mr. Greg-in-Hollywood:
**You could have gotten a more flattering pic of Cherry….like, W T F?? Or do you work for FOX?
Capita says:
I never saw Doubt but I saw Ms Jones in The Heiress. I didn’t want to go. I couldn’t think anybody could top Olivia but, goddess!, one of the most wonderful performances ever. I cried all the way home from NYC to Princeton. The picture aint that bad and hers is a Fox show. Only regretful thing about Ms Jones: she is been quoted as liking Mel Gibson. Nobody’s perfect. Jodie Foster has also been quoted as liking Mr Gibson, is that something they have in common. If we’re being gossipy, we might at well address that, mightn’t we?
Cinnamon Carter says:
Yo, Capita, I saw Jane Alexander in the original production of ‘The Heiress’ back in um, 1975 or so. I don’t remember a thing other than: nice set, nice dress….and that was when Jane Alexander was Miss All That in TV-Theaterland. So I am surprised that Cherry Jones made such an impression on (you must have had really good seats). Cherry Jones won a Tony for ‘The Heiress’ some 15 years ago….so you must have a really good memory or you don’t go to the theater very often.

I don’t get why you want to bring in the Thought Police/PC Police in to punish Mel Gibson and and any one associated with him. That is going way too far. He was fantastic as “Mad Max’ in Thunderdome…admit it.

If Serena doesn’t play the US Open, I think her sister has the best chance to win.
