Cher talks about her most memorable Oscars outfit
In 1986, Cher was egregiously overlooked by the Academy which failed to nominate her for an Oscar for her stellar performance in Mask.
But Cher, who won two years later for Moonstruck, showed up anyway – as a presenter in a feathered headdress and a midriff-baring beaded number.
And she stole the show wearing this Bob Mackie outfit and remarking that she had gotten her Academy handbook on how to dress like a serious actress.
In an interview with The New York Times this week, Cher talked about the outfit:
I just thought, ‘I’m going to look like I am,’ ” Cher said. “I’m going to be who I am. I don’t care if they like how I dress. And if you could have seen it up close. It was cashmere, the beading was beautiful, they made earrings, and the headdress was exquisite. It was impeccable. It was beautifully done.”
“Camp,” she added, “is in the eye of the beholder.”
