Cher says new album is her best but laments its cover – she also weighs in on Miley Cyrus
Who am I kidding?
The first day that Cher’s new album, Closer to the Truth, goes on sale (Sept. 24), I’m going to go out and buy it and I’m going to listen to the entire thing. Heck, I’ll probably get the deluxe version with the extra tracks.
Plenty of people have said they like Cher’s photo on her Woman’s World single far more than the blonde photo chosen for her album cover.
She explains to USA Today what she was going for: “I meant it to be camp, like a Playboy centerfold, but people didn’t get it and took it so seriously. You make mistakes, you pay and keep going.”
She’s the only artist to go No. 1 on a ‘Billboard’ chart for each of the past six decades. Closer to the Truth is her 26th solo album and the first since 2002’s Living Proof.
“I wasn’t even going to do it,” she says of the new album. “I thought I already did my best and I didn’t want to do less.”
“I’m just so not a Cher fan, but I like these songs,” she adds. “In my life, there are songs I’ve done that I really love, that I don’t think I ruined, like You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me, Song for the Lonely or Believe. But there’s only a handful. The early ones I don’t like at all. My voice was so strange and different. This is as good as I’m ever going to do.”
Cher has dazzled and scandalized over the years with some of her scantily-clad appearances such as in the If I Could Turn Back Time video. So she had no problem with Miley Cyrus wearing very little in her recent VMA performance were her ‘twerking’ was widely panned.
Cher was not impressed: “She could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house, I would have said, ‘You go, girl.’ It just wasn’t done well. She can’t dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn’t great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don’t stick out your tongue if it’s coated. If you’re going to go that far, then think about it before you do it.”

The album is fantastic and has a slew of big potential hits (Woman’s World – NOT being one of them!) – hopefully they will rerelease the album with a different cover later on as she did with Heart of Stone and Love Hurts in the 80s (altho in those cases the FIRST covers were the superior ones….)

Long live Cher!

The cuts I heard from the cd are just average, okay. Nothing so far would make me buy it. And the cover, oh well, that is a totally other obstacle.

The standard version of the album is streaming on Amazon.com. I too hope that the cd is released with a different cover. Lots of potential “hits” on this cd!
