Cher accepts Lifetime Achievement Grammy!

All of headlines about Cher’s appearance at the Grammys last night are focusing on her flub when announcing the winner of the Record of the Year prize. It’s a bit of a pity because it ended up overshadowing what is a well-deserved and long-overdue prize. Cher had her first number one song more than 60 years ago as part of Sonny and Cher (I Got You Babe in 1964) then had her first solo hit a year later with 1965’s All I Really Want to Do. Many hits followed – many hits. Many, many hits from Bang Bang, The Beat Goes On, and You Better Sit Down Kids in the 1960s to Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, Dark Lady, Half Breed, and Take Me Home in the 1970s to I Found Someone, We All Sleep Alone, If I Could Turn Back Time, and Just Like Jessie James in the 1980s. Hits in the 1990s included Believe, Heart of Stone, Love and Understanding and Strong Enough and since 2000, her hits have included Song For the Lonely, Woman’s World, You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me, and DJ Play the Christmas Song, among others.

For all this success, Cher had only won a single Grammy and that was for dance recording for Believe. Another recent Grammy Lifetime Achievement honoree, Diana Ross, had never won a single award as a member of the Supremes or as a solo act.

It’s a deeply flawed awards show but to finally give Cher some Grammy love for her amazing career was nice and should have been the headline!
