Chely Wright fans launch petition to get the lesbian country singer invited back to Grand Ole Opry

There are some silly petitions being launched these days but this would not be one of them.

The talented, gorgeous, articulate and courageous Chely Wright used to be frequently invited to sing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville – until she came out as a lesbian in 2010.

The petition states: In the past three years [Chely Wright] has had a new album, a book and a film that was part of the Nashville film festival. Yet she still has not been asked to sing at the Opry. We fans have started a petition asking The Grand Ole Opry to invite her back.

Chely is a new mom of twins but if she does indeed want to perform at the Opry again, she should get the opportunity. Country music power brokers seems to feel that embracing an openly-gay performer in any way will alienate their core audience.
