Chaz Bono to be honored at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala & Auction on Nov. 12
Chaz Bono will be honored at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala & Auction, hosted by Leslie Jordan (The Help) and featuring Jane Lynch (Glee) on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.
As was previously announced, Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka will also be honored.
Bono will be honored with the Center’s Board of Directors award.
Says Center CEO Lorri L. Jean: “Chaz has been a trailblazer in our community for many years, bravely speaking his truth and working to make our movement stronger. He has continued that leadership since coming out as a transgender man. No other person has done more than Chaz to promote visibility and understanding about the reality of transgender people. His courageous example is helping transgender youth and their families throughout the world. That’s great progress not only for the LGBT community, but for society as a whole.”
The gala will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12. The cocktail reception is at 6 p.m. with entertainment to follow at 8 p.m. Tickets for the gala are $300 for general admission or $400 for a VIP ticket. For more information, or to purchase your tickets, go to www.anniversarygala.org.

I think it would be nice if the center changed its name to include transgendered individuals. This would accomplish two things. It would actually show that transgendered people matter to the center, and it would indicate that gay is not interchangeable with transgender.
As a lesbian, I am unable to identify with gender identity disorder. To clarify…I am a lesbian, which means I am not attracted to men. I do not want to be a man, nor do I want my partner to look like a man. Hello! I applaud people for living their truths, if it helps them be more fully engaged in their lives.
Freud made some assessments with which I do not agree, and the fact that Chaz Bono came out as a lesbian, first, does not help people in their confusion between transgendered people and lesbians. He has since stated that he was confused and did not know how to self identify.
. You could honor Chaz Bono by including his identity in the center’s name.
I could say that he has advanced the cause of transgendered, transsexual individuals, when people question me on the subject. I could advise them that this center is so inclusive that it simply forgot to include how he self identifies in its name, but wants to honor him for advancing the rights of gay and lesbian people. Huh?
I can no sooner explain his feelings on being transgendered than a heterosexual could explain my orientation. It is gay, lesbian and transgendered, people. Get it right!
