Celeb Instagram: July 4 Edition!

I think I first learned about patriotism from my grandparents. I remember sitting in my grandfather’s barbershop as he shared political thoughts — the kind that would land him in a Cuban prison if he still lived there. With each cut of the scissors, another adjective. I think each spoken word made him feel more and more American. It’s no coincidence that a small — but bold — Old Glory hung just above him on the wall. Then there’s my grandmother. On a recent trip to Miami, she grabbed my hand and began crying talking about her native Cuba. How she misses the land she knew as a child. She let go of my hand to wipe away those tears. There was a smile and a pat on my thigh. “Well, that was then,” she said in Spanish. The smile triggered thoughts of gratitude for America; she’s thankful her children grew up here and her grandchildren were born here. “You’re so lucky,” she said. We are lucky. This photo was taken this weekend with my new family — just as fiercely American as my grandparents. We wore those red, white, and blue threads to honor the men and women who made (and make) this American experiment such a beautiful success. And maybe today, somewhere in the sky, there’s an old Cuban man in his little barbershop adorned with an American flag, letting freedom ring. Happy 4th of July
