Catching up with Sam Harris
Sam Harris is just a life force. So talented as a singer and an actor and so excited about life. The first winner of the original Star Search competition in the early 80s, Sam went on to become a Broadway star, and was the best part of the short-lived CBS sitcom The Class.
Sam and his partner Danny became parents last year and I talked to him about that during a chat we had at a recent Hollywood event. I’m always so happy tp see Sam who I met a few years back when my friend Jim Key and I happened to be seated next to Sam and his great friend Bridget Moynahan for a preview screening of Hairspray at the ArLight.
My first question to Sam was about how their baby son is: “It’s the best, he’s a year old now. He’s the greatest thing ever.”
Sam is not just busy being a daddy. He’s very excited about the stage version of The First Wives Club in which he will appear this summer at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.
“It’s Broadway bound so I’m very excited about that,” he said. “It’s a part that was suggested in the movie but they’ve turned it into this hysterical part. The character I’m playing plays all these parts – he;s sort of the fourth muskateer as a ruse to help the first wives get back at their husbands. It’s a ball.”
Sam is also has a new TV talk show in development and is doing concerts here and there: “There’s so much going on at once I just have to be grateful a lot because otherwise I just pull my hair out! (laughs).”
Sam is 46 now but still looks about as young as when he was on Star Search more than two decades ago. I wanted to know what his secret is. Said Sam: “Be happy, be grateful and have children.”
