Carrie Fisher talks about her dad’s death and its impact on ex-wives Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor

Carrie Fisher, whose HBO special Wishful Drinking debuted last Sunday, talked to the Los Angeles Times about a variety of topics recently, including her dedicating the show to her late father, singer Eddie Fisher.

He had been a huge star in the 50s when he was married to Carrie’s mom, Debbie Reynolds of Singin’ in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown fame.

But his popularity took a huge hit after he left Reynolds for the recently widowed Elizabeth Taylor back in 1958. He was also an absentee father to his children with Reynolds, Carrie and Todd.

Carrie was asked in the Times interview how her mom and Miss Taylor reacted to Eddie Fisher’s recent death.

“People would come up to my mom and go, ‘I’m so sorry for your loss.’ She’d say, ‘What do you mean, the one 50 years ago?’For my mother, my father who as not a good parent and certainly not a co-parent. And she had some compassion for him,  because he was not that well before his death.”

And Taylor?

“When I told Elizabeth, she cried. … I said to her ‘Well, you know he loved you.’ She said, ‘He did?’ It was darling.”

Taylor married Fisher but left him after she fell in love with her Cleopatra co-star Richard Burton.

As for Debbie Reynolds, her daughter says: “Really, it’s been so many years later now. Some of those memories from my mom have to be positive, but he did a very rough thing to her; to recover from that kind of public humiliation is really not something that happened.”

That’s something that Jennifer Aniston, famously dumped by Brad Pitt for Angelina Jolie, seems to be finding out.
