Calling herself “Norma Gay,” Kathy Griffin shows up at WeHo rally with her 89-year-old mom
Kathy Griffin had said earlier in the day Tuesday that not only was she upset that the CA Supreme Court had upheld Prop. 8, but so was her mother, Maggie. This is a sharp and witty woman who we have gotten to know some from her appearances on Kathy’s Emmy-winning show My Life on the D-List.
So what a thrill it was to see mother and daughter in West Hollywood at the rally. They took the stage last and Kathy first held up a protest sign over her head, Sally Field style in Norma Rae:
“Normally I would be doing dick jokes, but not tonight! You all remember the iconic film, Norma Rae starring Sally Field where she fought for all of us for the right to join a union. Well tonight, as Norma Gay, I tell you union is not enough! We demand marriage!”
Then she called to the stage, “the ultimate activist,” your very own warrior queen, my 89-year-old gay-loving mother!” Maggie Griffin then joined her daughter on stage and Kathy said to the crowd: “Let’s go march!”

Access Hollywood did an interview with Kathy after:
“I’m a proud Californian, but today I was ashamed of the Supreme Court,” Kathy told Access. “I think they are gonna do the right thing eventually … things like this, people taking it to the streets, this is how change really happens. And I’m so proud to be part of it, and I’m so proud of my mom for coming out here. She’s the 89-year-old activist. That last time she marched was against prohibition, so this is great!”
Griffin explained that California is not as liberal as some may perceive it.
“(Some) think that we’re a bunch of hippies and we’re too progressive (in California.) Turns out that Iowa has it right, we still have a way to go,” she said of the midwest state that recently legalized gay marriage. “But I really believe we’re gonna overturn it.”
