California Supreme Court’s Prop. 8 decision to be revealed today at 10 a.m. PST

After living through the pain of election night 2008 when California voters shockingly passed the amendment banning same-sex marriage, you enter a day like today hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

You hope that the California Supreme Court will overturn Proposition 8 amd enable people to resume getting married if they choose. But you have to be prepared for the justices to uphold the amendment and gird yourself for the hard fight ahead. Conventional wisdom is that the nearly 20,000 same-sex couples who did get married last year during the months where it was legal in California will be able to remain legally married. Among them are activists Robin Tyler and Robin Olsen (pictured, left).

Since the California court took up this issue, three other states have begun granting same-sex couples the right to marry: Iowa, Vermont, and Maine. New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey are poised to follow.

“The pundits have been saying all along that they believe the Court will uphold Prop. 8,” LA Gay and Lesbian Center CEO Lorri Jean said in a statement. “But as so many states in the last two months have approved the freedom to marry for same-sex couples, others have begun to hope that the California Court will do the right thing and strike Prop. 8 down.  Whatever the decision, our work is not over. If the justices uphold Prop. 8, they will have set the stage for the next battle over the freedom to marry in California.”
