Caitlyn Jenner to receive Arthur Ashe Courage Award at next month’s ESPY’s in Los Angeles
Bruce Jenner, re-introduced to the world as Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair earlier today, will no doubt help drive up the ratings for the ESPYs when they air on ABC on July 15.
During the annual awards show honoring the best in sports, the 1976 Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon will be presented with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
It is expected to be Jenner’s first major public appearance as Caitlyn.
The award, named after the late tennis star and humanitarian, went to Michael Sam last year shortly after he became the first openly gay man to be drafted by an NFL team.
Other past recipients of the award include Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, Robin Roberts and Pat Summitt.
The award is given to someone who shows ‘strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost,’ states ESPN.

I don’t find Caitlyn Jenner to be any of those things. What peril is she facing and at exactly what cost? This is nothing more than a financially backed strategically planned media event to make lots and lots of money for her and further the Jenner-Kardashian brand by exploiting the transgender community.
The real heroes are the people who must face the grind of daily life without the financial backing to cushion themselves from the threat of losing their job and/or housing in addition to facing hostility on the streets due to being transgender. I’d rather celebrate the real courage of these people over someone who is privileged. Caitlyn Jenner is just another cog in the cult of celebrity.
